A NOTE TO THE RUNNERS AT THE ABOVE
Running and poetry collide in months-long art project, featuring weekly run club, residencies and final exhibition
DATE, MELBOURNE Over four months, Australian ultramarathoner, author and photographer JOSH LYNOTT has collaborated with Melbourne’s AT THE ABOVE gallery and SPACE BETWEEN studio on A NOTE TO THE RUNNERS — an experiential project exploring the intersection of running and poetry.
A driver of community, self-care and identity, the act of running is deeply established across the mainstream and subculture as a lifestyle marker, with diverse groups and individuals continuing to organise around it. It’s long since been the domain of elite athletes alone or focussed on “time” or performance. In poetry, Lynott sees an activity and artform that shares a kinship with running, with both as forms of movement and expression.
Central to A NOTE TO THE RUNNERS is the weekly run club NOTES NIGHT RUN [NNR]. Hosting over 500 runners already, each Wednesday night session sees groups of participants join Lynott in departing from the At The Above space before returning to wind down, interact and document their own poems, letters and illustrations. These (sometimes deeply personal) collected works will form a key part of the project as a whole as it culminates in a two-week long exhibition, launched on Friday, October 4, running up until Melbourne Marathon. This show will feature floor-to-ceiling walls of poetry and art, a live treadmill installation with a revolving group of runners, the launch of Lynott’s publication and more.
Says Lynott, “A NOTE TO THE RUNNERS is a call to slow down in a world that perpetually emphasises the utility of speed. This 18 week project, including NOTES NIGHT RUN, reiterates an obvious truth: that we’re deprived of connection and the slow rituals that ground us. The challenge is in learning to slow down through understanding what is true to us. For me, running and writing are a way to achieve this.”
As a studio, Space Between has a long-standing connection to running, having worked with Nike and its athletes and communities for over a decade, while At the Above recently hosted the popular running publication Mental Athletic — a pioneering editorial project out of Milan — in partnership with cult Sydney run club Furies RC. For three weeks across July and August, Lynott inhabited At The Above itself in live-in residencies, undertaking a number of works in what became his temporary studio space.
Runners can register to join the final [NNR] sessions at anotetotherunners.com/nnr-rsvp, illuminated by Knog.
About Space Between
Since 2010, we’ve built a studio centered on people, culture and a belief that creativity comes from all around us. Underpinned by strategic creative thinking, innovation and a connection to community, we help bring partners authentically into the spaces they want to inhabit, embracing technology and audiences and exploring themes through art direction, architecture and graphic design. In the same building as the design studio is our concept space and gallery At the Above. Having run over 80 shows, popups and residencies in just three years, At The Above has roots in fashion, art and design, colliding disciplines in expansive and unconventional ways.
